How many times have you copied a text, a link, or an image, only to realize you've lost what you copied before? Maybe you wanted to paste it again, but it had already been overwritten by something else.
Here's the good news: Windows already has a hidden feature that solves this problem.
It's called Clipboard History and is activated with the key combination:
👉 Win key (the one with the Windows logo) + v
ℹ️ What exactly does it do?
Pressing Win + v, instead of the classic paste, opens a small panel with all the elements you've recently copied: text, links, images, phone numbers...
Just click on what you need to reinsert it, without having to copy it every time.

1️⃣ How to enable it for the first time
If you've never used it before, the first time you press Win + v, you'll be asked to enable clipboard history. Just click Enable and you're ready to go.
🔧 How to configure clipboard history
- Press Win + i to open Windows Settings.
- Go to System > Clipboard.
- In the Clipboard History section, you'll find several options:
- Toggle History: You can enable or disable the feature completely.
- Clear Data: Here you can delete all the history stored on your device.
🆒 Why is it useful?
- No more accidental losses: You can recover what you copied even hours ago.
- More productivity: If you're working on multiple documents or emails, you don't have to go back and forth to copy.
- It also works across multiple devices (if you enable Microsoft sync).
🛂 Security and privacy
There's one important detail, however: all copied items remain temporarily in memory.
This means that even sensitive data (passwords, card numbers, codes, etc.) could end up in your history.
👉 Therefore:
- Avoid leaving sensitive information in memory,
- Remember that you can delete individual items or clear your entire history. In the Win + v panel,
- In Windows settings, you can choose whether to keep the history only until reboot or beyond.
This way, you always have full control over your data.
⏳ History until reboot or permanently
By default, Windows keeps the history until you reboot your PC.
If you want certain items to remain even after a reboot, you can "pin" them from the Win + v panel by clicking the three dots next to the item and choosing Add to pinned or by clicking directly on the 📌 icon.
📝 This way, they are not deleted upon reboot.
👉 In Summary:
- Normal items = disappear upon restart.
- Pinned items = remain even after shutdown.
- Manual cleanup = always possible from Win + v or from the settings.
🔷 Conclusion
The Win + v combination is one of those simple yet brilliant features that save you time every day.
But just use it with a little attention to security.
The next time you find yourself copying the same text over and over again, remember to try:
Win + v
